President John Mahama has named Professor Korye Anim-Wright as chairman of the Ghana Sports Fund Board.
Prof Anim-Wright will be representing the Office of the President and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on the board which also has Ghana’s boxing legend and Hall of Famer, Azumah Nelson.
The three-time world boxing champion was appointed to the Ghana Sports Fund Board by the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams as the retired athletes representative.
The board was inaugurated on Friday by the Sports Minister at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
Prof. Anim-Wright is supported by Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, who serves as Administrator and also represents the Office of the President.
The constitution of the governing board sets the administrative foundation for what authorities describe as a more structured and sustainable approach to sports financing in Ghana. It brings together representatives from key state institutions, the sports ecosystem and the investment community.
The sports sector is represented by the National Sports Authority, through its Director-General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. Former Black Stars Management Committee member Ernest Thompson serves on the board as the experienced fund manager and investment banker.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is represented by its Chief Director, Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah, while the Ministry of Finance has nominated Mr Duah Alhassan Oteng as Technical Adviser.
From the local governance space, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is represented by Mrs Deborah Adei Djanie, Director of Human Resource Management and Development.
In addition, three members have been appointed directly by the President in line with the fund’s establishing framework. They are Ms Belinda Plange, Hon. Rachel Florence Appoh and Hon. Dickson Kyere-Duah, two of whom are women.
The Ghana Sports Fund is expected to play a pivotal role in mobilising, managing and disbursing resources for sports development, infrastructure, athlete welfare and grassroots programmes.
With the board now in place, attention will turn to how swiftly it can operationalise the fund and translate policy intent into measurable benefits for athletes and sports federations across the country.
