Chief of Protocol and Communication to the Ga Mantse, Ambassador Sylvester Parker-Allotey, has proposed that Ghana’s main international airport should be named after the late Ga paramount ruler, King Tackie Tawiah, in recognition of his immense contribution to Accra and the Ga State.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, he said the ongoing discussions about renaming the airport must consider eminent traditional leaders whose legacy reflects the history and identity of the capital.
“I personally think that somebody like King Tackie Tawiah has done a lot as a chief and as an overlord of Accra, and if his name were to be used, it would be very appropriate,” he stated.
Additionally, he stated that any decision to rename the airport should not be taken lightly, insisting the process must involve broad consultation with the Regional House of Chiefs, where traditional leaders can reach consensus on a suitable name.
“The change should be something which should be done in consultation with the Regional House of Chiefs, where we have our traditional leaders who can come to a consensus on the type of name to be used,” he explained.
He explained that the airport sits on Ga land, making it important for the custodians of the land to play a central role in determining an appropriate name.
