The Acting District Director of Health Services for Adansi Akrofuom, Joseph Kofi Annor, has raised concerns over a growing shortage of health workers in the district, attributing the situation partly to accommodation challenges driven by illegal mining activities.
According to him, many landlords prefer renting their properties to galamsey operators who are able to pay higher rents, making it difficult for nurses and other health workers to secure accommodation in the area.
He made these remarks during the commissioning of two health facilities at Yaadome and Mprekyere by the Adansi Akrofuom District Assembly, aimed at improving healthcare delivery in rural communities within the Ashanti Region.
Speaking to Adom News correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo, Mr. Annor described the new facilities as a major relief for residents, noting that they will reduce the need for patients to travel long distances to access healthcare.
Despite the development, he lamented the inadequate number of staff to operate the facilities effectively, stressing the urgent need for more nurses to be posted to the district.
Mr. Annor also highlighted transportation challenges affecting outreach services, calling for the provision of motorbikes to enable health workers to reach remote communities.
