President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will soon begin the procurement process for the construction of a new airport in Wa in the Upper West Region.
According to the President, the project forms part of the government's broader strategy to improve transport infrastructure, enhance connectivity and position the Upper West Region as a key commercial and logistics hub.
He disclosed that documentation for the project has been submitted to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for approval, after which the procurement process will commence.
“We are improving transport and logistics all over the country, including the railways, the roads, and air travel. And as you would have heard, we are currently about to go to the Public Procurement Authority for authorization to begin procurement for the new airport in Wa,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the Upper West Region's location as one of Ghana's gateways to the Sahel makes investment in modern transport infrastructure essential for expanding trade, promoting regional integration and stimulating economic growth.
He added that the proposed airport is expected to improve mobility, facilitate business activities and support the government's wider infrastructure development agenda across the country.
The President made the announcement during a courtesy call by the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 8.
