The government is holding a national interfaith memorial service in honour of the eight people who lost their lives in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.

The ceremony is taking place at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), with President John Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, government officials, families of the deceased and loved ones in attendance.

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane-Boamah and seven others, including officials and crew members, while they were travelling to the Ashanti Region to support efforts in the fight against illegal mining.

The Ghana Armed Forces said the Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, took off from Accra at 0912 GMT on August 6, 2025, and was heading to Obuasi when it crashed in a wooded area at Adansi Sikaman in the Ashanti Region.

The aircraft was destroyed by fire following the crash, which shocked the nation and led to widespread tributes from political leaders, state institutions and members of the public.

The memorial service is expected to provide an opportunity for the country to remember the lives and contributions of the departed and offer support to their families a year after the tragedy.
