President John Dramani Mahama has announced the termination of the Police Hospital expansion contract after 22 years of delays, citing prolonged disagreements with the contractor and cost overruns.
He said the government would take responsibility for completing the project, with about GH¢200 million to be provided in the 2027 Budget to bring the expanded facility into service before the end of that year.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new 85-bed ward at the Police Hospital, President Mahama directed the Minister for Finance to provide the funds.
“Following protracted disagreements and cost overruns with the contractor, I’ve asked the Minister for Finance to provide in the 2027 Budget approximately GH¢200 million that is required to complete the Police Hospital expansion,” he said.
“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We’re going to complete it ourselves.”
The President said the completed expansion would add another 106 beds to the hospital, taking its total capacity to more than 300 beds.
The expansion is expected to include a 12-bed intensive care unit (ICU), a new accident and emergency centre, 11 consulting rooms and four paediatric consulting rooms.
It will also provide magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scan equipment, three general surgical theatres, a specialised orthopaedic theatre and an endoscopy unit.
A mortuary with a capacity of 222 bodies is also planned as part of the expanded facility.
President Mahama said the government aimed to complete the project and bring it into service before the end of 2027.
At the event, the President also announced the donation of two new ambulances to the Police Hospital to support its emergency response and the delivery of services at the newly commissioned ward.
The hospital expansion forms part of efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and increase capacity to provide specialised treatment to police personnel and other patients.
The GH¢200 million allocation is expected to be included in the 2027 Budget, while the government assumes responsibility for completing the long-delayed expansion.
