The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagba, has dismissed claims of vote buying during the Kumawu by-elections.

Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, he said that as far as he was concerned no such thing happened at any of the polling stations he visited and/or supervised.

He noted that despite Kumawu being an NPP stronghold, the party worked hard to campaign and reach out to the electorates and thus it will be a shame to soil their hard work with vote-buying claims.

“There isn't any truth in that claim that has been made. And I think that the earlier we dropped that, the better. How many people can you ever pay to go and vote for you? We came here and engaged the people. They came out this morning, all through this afternoon and voted with their conscience, as expected,” Mr Ahiagba said.

He claimed that unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries where there were videos of vote buying no such evidence has been made available about the elections in Kumawu.

His comment comes after some residents of Wonoo, on Tuesday morning, alleged that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) were involved in vote buying in the by-election in Kumawu.

They claim officials from the camp of NPP were sharing GH¢20 and GH¢10 to electorates who willingly show their voter’s ID card.

This is to ascertain whether they are voters and to ensure they get them to vote for their candidate, Ernest Yaw Anim, in the election.

Also, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made similar allegations against the NPP.

Mustapha Gbande stated that although the electoral area has been a traditional stronghold of the governing party, it has barely experienced any developmental project.

As a result, the NPP has made vote buying their go-to approach since they have nothing to show for their prolonged years of being in power.

However, the NPP since the claims were made stood firm denying the allegations by the opposition.

“I don't think that we want to dignify the misrepresentation of the truth. He (the NDC candidate) is free to do whatever he wants. The law should work. We have done our work. The police and law enforcement should do their work,” Mr Ahiagba.
