Accra Lions have formally protested the appointment of referee Gideon Nii Coffie for their upcoming Ghana Premier League match against Vision FC, citing concerns over his previous performance.
In a letter addressed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the club's Chief Executive Officer, Nana Obiri Yeboah Lewis, requested a change in the match official for their Matchday 19 fixture in Tema.
The club’s protest stems from Coffie’s officiating in their Matchday 8 clash against Legon Cities, which they claim led to heightened tensions and nearly incited crowd trouble.
"We have been forced into making this request due to his performance in our Matchday 8 fixture with Legon Cities FC in Legon that charged fans to attempt pelting the match officials with bags of water," the letter stated.
Accra Lions argue that refereeing decisions significantly impact the outcome of matches and, therefore, officials with the right expertise must be assigned to ensure the integrity of the game.
"The performance of match officials undoubtedly has an influence on matches, and it is very important that persons with the right capacity take charge of games to ensure that high standards are not lowered," the club added.
The club is hopeful that the GFA will consider their concerns and take appropriate action.
The GFA is yet to respond to the request.
