The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has defended President Nana Akufo-Addo’s record on economic management.
He stated that his administration performed commendably despite significant challenges.
In an interview with Citi FM on Thursday, 12 December, Mr Ahiagbah attributed the economic difficulties experienced during Akufo-Addo’s tenure to external shocks beyond the government’s control.
He argued that under normal conditions, Ghana’s economy would have been in a much stronger position by the time Akufo-Addo completes his term in 2025.
“The task given to Akufo-Addo to manage the economy, he didn’t do badly at all. Take away all the shocks that we had, which are real shocks, and this economy would have been in a much better place than where we are ending up,” Mr Ahiagbah explained.
He highlighted the growth figures recorded this year as evidence of the government’s efforts. “If you look at this year, the first three quarters show the economy growing at about 7%.
This indicates that by 2025, we will have built momentum that will drive further growth. That must be noted,” he remarked.
While acknowledging the economic downturn, Mr Ahiagbah credited the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration with reversing the decline and positioning the country for recovery.
He dismissed claims that the government avoided discussing economic issues during the campaign, emphasising their commitment to addressing the nation's economic challenges.
