Akufo-Addo should intervene in Bryan’s comment saga – IDEG

Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey

The Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has called on President Akufo-Addo to intervene in the ‘NPP never handing over power’ comment.

Dr Emmanuel Akwetey believes clearing the air is necessary to prevent tensions from escalating.

“But finally, I think the person to speak is the President on this matter and his ability to dismiss it as not his policy is extremely important,” he said.

This comes after the Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong on Saturday said the current NPP will not hand over power to the NDC.

According to him, the party will use whatever means necessary to remain in power.

He added that if the NDC dares to use threats, and brute force in the 2024 election, the NPP will show them that they have the men.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been agitated by the comment.

Reacting to the development, they called on the IGP to arrest Mr Acheampong.

This they said is because his comment poses a threat to democracy.

Meanwhile, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the party is in support of the Abetifi MP’s comment about the current government never handing over power to the NDC.

Henry Nana Boakye in an interview on JoyFM’s Super Morning Show on Monday described the statements as positive.

“Yes, we [ NPP] stand by it….He was fully positive and we [NPP] endorse it,” he said.

According to him, The Agric Minister made the remark because of the economic stabilisation in the country citing the cedi stabilisation and fall in fuel prices, the NPP is confident that due to these turn around “we are not going to hand over power to them.”

But, Mr Kwettey has supported calls for Mr Acheampong to be invited for questioning.

He also suggested that the questioning be made public to serve as a caution to others.

He explains that this is due to the nature of the comment and his status in society.

“Given that he is a minister and he is a member of parliament and he makes these statements, it cannot be taken lightly and given the precedent or antecedent and that is why I endorse the point that the police ought to invite him for interrogation,” he explained.
