The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey says 72 of his constituents have been taken away by military personnel.

According to him, the whereabouts of the detained residents is not currently known.

Mr. Norgbey stated that he went to Michel Camp but they were not there, so he is now on his way to Burma Camp to continue the search.

“To the best of my knowledge, I know about 72 of them were taken away from Ashaiman and I am making frantic efforts to get their location.”

The MP made this remark in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday in reaction to reports that soldiers brutalised some residents as a result of the death of one of their officers.

A retired Immigration officer says he is unable to account for three of his children upon his return from a funeral at Xiavi-Ho.

According to him, he was called by his eldest son who said the military personnel banged on their gate and demanded that it should be opened.

“He said daddy the soldiers have come, they are banging on the gate and said where are you? And then I said you have not yet come. He said no, they are banging the gate, they are forcefully opening it…Just before then he said they have entered the house, getting into my room …before we realized we cannot hear from him again,” he recounted.

The retired Immigration officer said he later had to call their neighbours to inquire about what was happening.

According to him, “eventually, I realised that three of them have been forcefully taken.”

“Unarmed civilian what crime have they done?” he questioned.

He stated that the soldiers, upon invasion forcibly opened five of their doors, broke some louvre blades and glasses etc.

However, one of his children managed to escape although bruised.

He said he will be filing a report on his children being abducted at the Police station.

It would be recalled that in the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, some military personnel invaded Ashaiman, an Accra suburb, and brutalised some residents in their search for the perpetrators of their colleague's murder.

The MP for the area has however condemned the act by the military men.

According to him although the killing of the soldier was a dastardly act, “we cannot take the laws into our hands whether we are lawmakers or security agencies.”

According to him, the death of the soldier must be investigated.

He expressed his condolence to the bereaved family.

Meanwhile, he is hopeful the Speaker of Parliament will refer the matter to Defense and Interior Committee for a probe.

“They have to recall their men back to the barracks and I am making a statement on the floor, Speaker will have to refer the issue to Defense and Interior Committee,” he said.

The legislator stressed the rate of military brutality in recent times is worrying, hence the call for a probe into the matter.
