Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene has inaugurated the District’s Spatial Planning Committees (SPC’s) and Technical Sub-Committees (TSC’s) of the forty-three (43) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Ashanti Region.

In his inaugural address, Dr Amoakohene emphasized the importance of the committees' role in shaping the region's development, ensuring physical developments align with the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act 2016 (Act 925).

He noted that the Land Use and Spatial Planning Act, 2016 (Act 925) establishes the District Spatial Planning Committees and Technical Sub-Committees purposely to perform the spatial planning and human settlement management function in our respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA’s) across the country.

"We can achieve well-structured communities devoid of unauthorized structures, eradicate flooding and a cleaner environment, if members of these committees embrace their responsibilities and discharge them to the fullest in accordance with the provisions of the Act," he said.

He urged members to take their responsibilities seriously, noting that their work would impact the region's physical and economic transformation.

The committees' mandates include ensuring developments follow approved plans, approving development permits, and preparing district development frameworks.

Dr Amoakohene also highlighted the need for robust spatial data platforms to inform decision-making and reduce urban congestion.

He therefore encourages all MMDA's in the region to build robust spatial data platforms, integrating land records, cadastral information, transportation models, and environmental baselines for enhanced decision-making.

The Minister called on members to discharge their duties with integrity, transparency, and professionalism, emphasizing the community's reliance on them for proper development .

The Ashanti Regional Minister also announced a project to restore Kumasi's "Garden City" status.

Speaking at an event, Dr Frank recalled how Kumasi was once known for its green nature, enhanced sanitation, and clean environment.

However, he noted that this green identity has diminished over time due to urbanization and lack of a sustainable program to maintain the city's greenery.

Determined to revive Kumasi's former glory, Dr Amoakohene said that he has commissioned a committee led by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of KNUST to develop a proposal for enhanced city greening, including tree planting, flowering, and gardening.

He noted that the project, "Restoring Kumasi's Garden City Identity through Integrated Urban Environmental Management," will soon be rolled out, and support is being solicited.

"The Regional has commissioned a committee chaired by the Pro-Vice Chancellor of KNUST to put together a proposal aimed at ensuring that Greater Kumasi area has enhanced city greening, which includes tree planting, flowering and gardening".

"The project; ‘‘Restoring Kumasi’s Garden City Identity through Integrated Urban Environmental Management’’ will soon be rolled out and we will, therefore, solicit for your support to make this project a success."
