Bawumia has failed the country woefully – NDC MP

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Asunafo South constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region, Eric Opoku says Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has failed the country despite his qualifications as an economist.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 29, Mr Opoku stated that Ghanaians are suffering due to the mismanagement of the economy led by Dr Bawumia.

According to him, the NPP flagbearer for the 2024 general elections whom President Akufo-Addo named as "Dr Digitalisation" has failed to live up to expectations as the head of the economic management team.

"He is no longer the brilliant economist, he is now transmogrified into another area, digitalisation. Meanwhile, Dr Bawumia throughout his life has been a trained economist. He has failed this country seriously, Mr Speaker, woefully," he said.

He emphasised that Ghana is ranked sixth among the top 10 countries with the highest debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Mr Opoku stressed that Dr Bawumia has no knowledge of the economy and is not in charge of the economy.

"Now, he is in charge of digitalisation, from brilliant economist to digitalisation. He's now a computer man," he said.

He stated that President Akufo-Addo indicated the government had successfully negotiated an IMF facility of $3 billion which he said would stabilise the economy and bring back hope.

“Mr Speaker, this same government, in two years, borrowed 77 billion from Bank of Ghana, an equivalent of 8 billion dollars and that 8 billion, government could not use it to stabilise Ghana,” he said.
