Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, has formally raised serious concerns regarding alleged abuses committed by security forces enforcing a curfew in Bole and surrounding areas.
In a letter dated September 4 addressed to the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Sulemana highlighted disturbing reports from the Arise Bole Youth, who have accused law enforcement of unlawful actions during the implementation of curfews.
The letter details two main allegations:
- Unlawful Detentions: Residents reportedly faced unlawful detentions, with security personnel allegedly dragging them from their homes during curfew hours.
- Intimidation and Assault: There are claims that security forces have intimidated, assaulted, and subjected residents to inhumane treatment, including an alarming report of an elderly man who was allegedly killed during these encounters.
Alhaji Sulemana emphasised the severity of these allegations, urging an immediate and thorough investigation into the actions of the security forces.
He reiterated that such behaviour, if proven true, undermines the trust and safety of the community.
In his appeal, Alhaji Sulemana called on security forces to conduct their duties with the professionalism and respect expected of them.
He expressed the necessity for law enforcement to engage with the community in a manner that upholds human rights, rather than instilling fear.
The Arise Bole Youth and various community leaders have expressed grave concerns over the treatment of residents during the curfew, demanding accountability and assurance of safety from the authorities.
Many in the community are rallying for better oversight of security operations, advocating for a dialogue between the police and the citizens they serve.
The situation in Bole serves as a critical reminder of the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and community safety.
As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits a transparent resolution that will address these alarming allegations and restore trust in the security apparatus of the region.
