The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the rescheduling of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The tournament, initially slated for 17 March to 3 April 2026, will now take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026, just days after the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup.
CAF acknowledged that logistical challenges had disrupted preparations for the competition, prompting the decision to push the dates forward.
Media reports in recent weeks had suggested that hosts Morocco were considering stepping back from staging the tournament. Amid the uncertainty, officials in South Africa reportedly indicated their willingness to step in and host the competition should Morocco withdraw.
In a statement, CAF said the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders.
“After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 to 25 July – 16 August 2026, to ensure the success of this important women’s competition, in the light of certain unforeseen circumstances.”
CAF also reassured fans and participating nations that preparations are ongoing and expressed confidence that Morocco will successfully host the tournament.
“Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway and all the parties are confident that it will be very successful,” the statement added.
The 2026 edition of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations will also serve as part of the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
Ghana's Black Queens, have been drawn in Group D, where they will face Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde as they seek a strong showing at the continental tournament.
