Former Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Chairman, J.Y. Appiah, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to enforce strict measures against clubs that fail to maintain their pitches, despite the availability of boreholes to support pitch maintenance.
Speaking on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, Appiah expressed disappointment over the poor conditions of several stadia, questioning the effectiveness of investments made to improve them.
“Look at the pitches we play on. I even understand we constructed boreholes for some of the clubs, but look at the pitches. Has the money been put to good use? Where are the boreholes? Are they working? Who needs to ensure that they work?” he asked.
According to him, clubs must be held accountable for ensuring their facilities are properly maintained, especially when resources have been provided to them.
“Do you fix a borehole and leave it there? Don’t you ensure that it is put to the use for which it was constructed? Why did you construct the borehole? Is it not for the maintenance of the pitches?”
He argued that clubs failing to maintain their pitches should be forced to play their home games at alternative venues with better facilities.
“When you see that the pitch is not in good shape, have you questioned the one you gave it to? You must question them and let them understand that due to the bad nature of their pitches, you’re not playing here—go to another venue with a better pitch.”
GFA received over $260,000 from FIFA to maintain about 80 natural grass pitches, Ghana Premier League matches continue to be played on substandard pitches, sparking concerns over player safety and the overall quality of football.
