Contractors working on the 100-bed capacity Trauma and Accident Hospital at Obuasi in the Ashanti Region are hopeful of completing the facility on schedule.

The facility, which will be the biggest in the Municipality, has reached about 40 percent completion.

Project Manager, Frank Godwin Acquah says with the pace of work so far, the project will be delivered within the thirty month deadline.

“We have done 14 months already. We are out of the sub-structures, meaning all the ground floor works are done. We have about 15 percent work to do on the floor slabs and then we are done with the first floor slabs also.

“Some of the structures, the two and three beds, are ready for roofing so by next week that will be done. Equipment procurement has also started. We don’t want any delays so by the time we are done with the main buildings, they will also be in so we can install them,” he told Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah who was on a working visit to the area.

Construction of the Obuasi Municipal Trauma and Accident Hospital is financed through part of a €55 million loan facility acquired by the government through Deutsche Bank.

The hospital being constructed by the Universal Hospital Group, a fully-owned Ghanaian company consists of an Emergency Department with a Triage. It has three operating theatres, recovery rooms, resuscitation rooms, plaster room, a diagnostics centre to include a CT scan, X-ray, fluoroscopy, laboratory and a blood bank. It also has an Out-Patient Department, including a pharmacy and consulting rooms, public health department and medical administration.

Simon Osei Mensah also visited a health centre being constructed within the municipality by the Municipal Assembly with funding from the Mineral Royalties.

Municipal Chief Executive, Elisha Adansi Bonah said the facility is a two storey clinic with new accommodation expected to complement existing ones in the area.

The assembly has lined up a number of school projects to improve infrastructure in public schools within the area and already, work on a 12-unit classroom block at Antobuasi Methodist School is nearing completion.

“If you go to Bidieso we have a six-unit classroom block ongoing. At Bogobiri we are trying to end the shift system. That one we are doing now is replacing the old classrooms which are not able to accommodate the pupils. The MP is also doing another project to help eliminate the shift system totally,”,Mr. Adansi Bonah added.

At Ahansonyewode in the Obuasi East District, a community centre with washrooms and 12 lavatories has also been constructed with funding from the Minerals Development Fund.

District Chief Executive, Faustina Amissah, explains the facility was constructed based on the community’s need assessment.

Another police station is also completed and furnished to improve security in the District.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, who inspected the projects expressed satisfaction at the work done so far, and emphasised the need to improve infrastructure in these areas to drive development.
