Andre Ayew believes issues regarding the captaincy of the Black Stars would remain debatable for a long time.
The 34-year-old, who is currently the team’s substantive captain, took over the mantle from Asamoah Gyan in 2019 before the Africa Cup of Nations, which sparked controversy
Kwasi Appiah’s decision to strip Asamoah Gyan of the armband prompted the Ghana's all-time top scorer to threaten withdrawal from the squad for the 2019 continental event.
President Akufo-Addo had to step in to convince Gyan to accept a General Captain role at the tournament in Egypt.
Speaking about the debates surrounding the Black Stars captaincy during an interaction with University of Ghana students, Ayew said, “The captaincy in our country will always be a topic of debate sooner or later. The next one who comes will spark another debate.
“The next one who comes in 10 years will also lead to another debate. That’s how it is. Anyone who is going to be the leader of a national team should be ready for that because we can’t avoid it.”
It appears there will be a transition to a new Black Stars captain, as Ayew was not invited for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
