Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has challenged the Muslim community to report perpetrators of violence ahead of the 2020 elections.

 Addressing hundreds of Muslims at the Black Star Square Sunday as part of activities to mark Eid-ul-Adha, the Vice President urged Muslims to not renege in upholding the dignity of Islam which stands for peace and tolerance.

“We should remain vigilant in our communities and neighbourhood. We must watch out for agent provocateurs who would want to breach the peace in order to undo all the success that we have chalked in our developmental journey.

“Ghana continues to remain an island of peace in a troubled region…let us report any suspicious characters in our community to the security agencies so that the name of Islam is not soiled on the altar of some political goal that some misguided elements may seek to achieve,” the Vice President said at the Black Star Square.

Dr Bawumia also revealed that there are plans to construct a medical university in the Northern Region as well as 42 secondary schools in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Eid Planning Committee, Alhaji Alhassan Abdullahi Sulley has also warned the Muslim community against political provocateurs who fall on them to cause violence during the election season.

Eid-ul-Adha is a celebration by Muslims globally to commemorate the symbolic sacrifice of Ibrahim’s only son, Ismail.

In Ghana, the day will be marked across the country with Muslim prayers and later climaxed with the sacrifice of goats, cows and sometimes camels.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has also urged Muslims to use the Eid ul Adha celebrations to pray for peace, love, and progress for the country.

In a statement, the ex-President and his, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, urged Muslims in Ghana to reflect on how much they are willing to commit to what is good, holy and noble. "Our prayers and sacrifices to Allah as we mark the day should be full of a common desire to see to the good of our families, communities and especially the deprived," the statement said.
