Fire has burnt down stores containing hundreds of cedis worth of goods at the Mile 7 market in Achimota, Accra.
The cause of the fire, which started around 12:30am and destroyed properties, is yet to be known.
In a post on social media, the Ghana National Fire Service revealed that about 30 wooden structures were destroyed along with 50 metal containers used for commercial purposes.
The fire service noted that it took the efforts of the Abelemkpe Fire Station and the Legon Fire Station to put out the fire.
“The stout efforts of the combined team brought the ferocious fire under control at 03:18 hours. The Crew finally succeeded in knocking the ruinous fire out at 05:15 hours to save other surrounding residential structures and the Mile 7 Post Office from any fire damage. The cause fire is yet to be determined. Fortunately, no casualty was recorded.”
Meanwhile, speaking to JoyNews one trader said that she lost about GHS200,000 worth of goods after the fire was put out.
She noted that she could not salvage anything from her shop despite the efforts of the fire service.
One man who owns a cold store with his sister said they were noted of the fire at around 12:30am, however, efforts to reach the fire service proved futile. So, he drove to the nearest police station to seek for help and was promised the GNFS were on their way.
Although they arrived to put out the fire, the trader said they have lost their goods and appliances like fridges among others.
He told JoyNews that one eyewitness saw two men drive away from the scene on a motorcycle when the fire started. He stated that even though the official report is yet to come out, many are suspecting the men.
Meanwhile, other traders have called for help with many saying that they used all their money to operate their businesses.
