Minister for Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has indicated that Ghana’s political culture is generally unfriendly to women.
According to the Ablekuma West MP, throughout history, Ghana has had a political atmosphere that has been dominated by men and has seen less progress over the years.
“I have been consistent in calling out political parties on this because I think that it is a political culture in our country. It is not very friendly to women. Women have enough strength that has never converted into political power at any level; from district assembly right up to the Presidency,” she said.
Speaking during a Newsfile discussion on former President Mahama's running mate, Mrs. Ekuful argued that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination may be good because it puts women in the limelight; however, it cannot be a basis on which a conclusion on the success of the party can be drawn.
“Yes she may be all that and more but she cannot show up as a success on the ticket on which she is and that ticket is led by John Dramani Mahama,” she said.
She further argued that there’s no doubt Prof Opoku-Agyemang has been successful in her field as an educationist however, that does not transcend her accomplishments in the political field.
“I have no quarrels with the personal accomplishment of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang but she is sitting atop an organization which is not very friendly to women.
"And so she has her work cut out for her if she thinks that by her mere nomination she is going to make any difference," she said.
