The Minority in Parliament has accused government of giving Ghanaians false hope that the Covid-19 situation in the country is under control.
Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader said the Akufo-Addo government is engaged in a public relations gimmick to create a false sense of security which is different from the reality on the ground.
“Government should desist from selling false hope that the situation is under control and using its management of information as a cover of this fuss.
“That insults the intelligence of Ghanaians because all was not well when we were even at 200 or 300 how can it be well at 3,000 and counting,” he told the press at a briefing in Parliament, Thursday.
On Tuesday, May 5, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) revealed that data on Ghana’s rate of Covid-19 infections shows the country’s case count has peaked and it is yet to decline if citizens adhere to the preventive protocols.
However, a Pharmacist, Dr Kwame Asiedu Sarpong countered the claim of GHS indicating that the multiplicity of factors that impact the spread of the disease doesn’t support the assertion.
“The fact that you are testing more means you will identify more but it also means the disease is spreading more and that’s why in our opinion we are nowhere near our peak,” he said.
Addressing the media, the Tamale South MP appealed to the Akufo-Addo administration to heed to the advice of scientists and healthcare professionals assisting him to contain the virus.
He noted that although President Nana Akufo-Addo may be at the helm of affairs he must rely on the technical advice of experts to successfully eradicate the virus.
“Government must honour these [healthcare workers] hardworking and sincere persons and respect the data that comes from them contributes to the purpose of guiding decisions on this matter,” he said.
The Minority Leader also alleged that government is not providing adequate care for persons who have tested positive for the virus.
According to Mr Iddrisu, the patients are not given any drug except Vitamin C.
“I have had the opportunity to speak to one of the patients in isolation at the Ga East Hospital and they report that they are not taking good and proper care of them,” he stated.
Demanding accountability, Mr Iddrisu called for a full audit of money expended on the initiatives related to the novel coronavirus.
He highlighted that government has not accounted for monies spent so far and the Minority will not hesitate to demand an audit into all expenditure of Covid-19.
