In a decisive move to enhance security and improve night-time visibility ahead of the Christmas festivities, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, has distributed streetlights to all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.

The initiative, part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure safer communities, is expected to significantly brighten major roads and residential areas, particularly during the festive season when vehicular and pedestrian movement increases.

Speaking at the official handing-over ceremony, Hon. Ocloo disclosed that each District Assembly will receive 100 streetlights, while Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies will be allocated 150 streetlights each.

“This intervention is deliberately targeted at improving road safety, enhancing night-time visibility, and reducing criminal activities across the Greater Accra Region,” she stated.

The Regional Minister stressed that the success of the project depends on the commitment of the assemblies, urging them to ensure the immediate installation of the streetlights.

“I am giving all assemblies a one-week ultimatum to install these streetlights and submit a comprehensive report on the progress made,” she directed.

Madam Ocloo also issued a stern warning against vandalism and tampering with the streetlights, cautioning that offenders will face strict sanctions.

“Anyone found destroying or interfering with these streetlights will face strict penalties. We will not tolerate sabotage of government property meant for public safety,” she warned.

Reinforcing the need for accountability, the Regional Minister reminded the assemblies that the Presidency is closely monitoring developments.

“President John Dramani Mahama is aware of everything happening on the ground. This is why all MMDAs must do the right thing and deliver results,” she added.

The streetlight distribution is expected to transform the night-time environment across Greater Accra, providing residents with safer, well-lit communities as the region prepares for the Christmas celebrations.
