The Spokesperson for the Vice President says government will not sit reserved for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to use propaganda to derail its efforts in the coronavirus fight.

Dr Gideon Boako told Samson Lardy Anyenini on Joy FM’s Newsfile Saturday, that since the country recorded cases of Covid-19, the party has been misinforming citizens about what government is doing so as to paint it black.

His comments come after Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia touted President Akufo-Addo’s management of the economy even in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Bawumia's comment was in response to former President John Mahama's criticism of government’s handling of the crisis including food distribution.

The Vice President said “we have been able to perform much better on the situation we inherited. In fact, the data makes it very clear.

"So My humble advice to former President Mahama is to take a look at the data before you speak, otherwise, you will end up embarrassing yourself.”

The Vice President’s statement has, however, been heavily criticised by the opposition and a section of the public particularly those on social media.

But defending his boss, Mr Boako said Dr Bawumia was right to do what he did because the NDC flagbearer has politicised the fight against the virus each time he held his Facebook Live sessions.

He said it is, therefore, the duty of the incumbent government to correct any misinformation that has been disseminated before it causes havoc to the party and the country.

“As you said, Mr Mahama is a politician and therefore has the right to do politics. We shouldn't also forget that Mr Akufo-Addo and Bawumia did not get to where they are because they were followers of a church or choir brigade.

“They rode on the back of politics and they are seeking political mandate in this years’ election. So while they [government] are doing all the good things it will not be right that we force them to keep quiet when the opposition is destroying matters else by the time you realise everything is destroyed,” he stated.

He also indicated that supporters of the NDC regularly use abusive words to attack government but Dr Bawumia when responding to Mr Mahama used facts to clarify the agenda-driven issues of the opposition.

“Bawumia didn't even speak for more than 20 minutes but the NDC and John Mahama have done their propaganda for more than over two months and nobody has responded. So I think the vice president was right to do what he did.

“There is no political leader who sits down unconcerned and allow the opposition to throw shade at it and doesn't respond because their propaganda could consequentially affect fortunes of them winning an election,” he was categorical

On his part, John Abdulai Jinapor, the Yapei-Kusawgu MP who was on the show said Dr Bawumia’s comparison of Covid-19 to ‘dumsor’ was unnecessary.

He explained that during the energy crisis under the Mahama government the economy grew at a steady pace, however, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Ghana’s ‘robust’ economy will only grow at 1.5% due to Covid-19.

“When we had this challenge we grew about 3% now you are faced with a similar challenge and you are projected to grow at 1.5%, so who better manages this country?” he quizzed.
