Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says that intimidation and insecurity continue to threaten the integrity of Ghana's elections.
According to him, despite the unfortunate deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 election, there is still a problem with insecurity during elections.
Speaking at a press conference, he cautioned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to avoid causing violence during elections and expressed a lack of trust in the ruling party.
According to him, "the NPP government and its members would desist from fomenting violence during the election, but as usual, ladies and gentlemen, you trust the NPP at your own peril."
"For instance, on December 19, 2023, in the Dompe electoral area in Tarkwa Nsuaem, in the district-level election, which is supposed to be nonpartisan, NPP thugs invaded the process just because the NPP-aligned aspirant was clearly losing the election; likewise, at Abofu Presby Park in Greater Accra, NPP thugs fired guns just because the NPP was losing elections," he said on Monday, January 8, 2024.
Mr. Nketia said that because perpetrators of election-related violence have not been held accountable, this encourages bad behavior and violence in future elections.
Mr. Nketia said his party will not accept a repeat of the election-related violence that occurred in 2020 and urged security agencies to step up their efforts to maintain order during the 2024 elections.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we in the NDC will not tolerate a repeat of the 2020 election-related violence murders. This being the case, we urge all security actors to remain professional for the good of our dear country, Ghana.”
