Former President John Mahama has called on the Clergy to help save Ghana from sinking into decadence and a dictatorship under President Akufo-Addo.
He said the gains made in the country's 27-year democratic journey are being eroded, setting the country backwards.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer said the bastardisation and politicisation of state institutions under the NPP government is a tragedy befalling the nation.
He made these comments when he introduced his running mate Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang to the leadership of the Christian Council in Accra.
"No matter where we belong to, this is the time to unite and save our country. We can't sit and look on as our nation slips towards decadence and dictatorship" Mahama said.
Ghana has been touted as ‘the beacon of democracy in Africa’ because of its relatively stable political climate under its fourth republic.
But Mr Mahama said the country is at the crossroad in its democratic dispensation as a result of government's interference in the work of state institutions.
"The tragedy befalling us is a judiciary that lacks impartiality, an oppressed parliament and pliant Electoral Commission, an Auditor-General hounded out of office and a misuse military, anti-corruption institutions in bandage and an intimidated media and a terrified moral society" Former President claimed.
Mr. Mahama criticised the NPP government of its insatiable desire to stay in power at all cost; perverting the future generations in their quest.
He, however, commended the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council for boldly defending one of its own, Bishop Charles Agyinasare who recently spoke against the ills in society.
The NDC Flagbearer also promised to run a clean campaign devoid of insults and vilification and called on the Church to pray for God's guidance as Ghana inches close to December 7 polls.
He is also expected to introduce his running mate to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu when he later calls on the Muslim clerics at Old Fadama in Accra.
