Former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised government's flood prevention and management strategies following recent heavy downpours in Accra and other regions.
Taking to Facebook, Mr. Mahama expressed dismay over the purported extensive investments in flood mitigation, noting that numerous areas continue to grapple with substantial flooding even during minor rainfall.
He further lamented the government's neglect in addressing significant drainage issues such as the Odaw, as well as other crucial flood prevention measures, labeling the current state of affairs as distressing.
“Considering the huge sums of money allegedly spent by this government on draining the Odaw and other flood prevention interventions, the present situation is distressing. According to the government, $200 million was spent on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID).
“While the impact of that huge amount and its intervention have yet to be felt, Parliament was recently recalled to approve another $150 million for the same GARID."
Mr Mahama stressed that safeguarding the lives and property of citizens must be of paramount concern for any responsible government.
He asserted that, "The current administration has faltered in fulfilling this obligation."
