The Minority in Parliament has demanded an impartial inquiry into events that led to an explosion at Apeatse, a town near Bogoso in the Western region on Thursday, January 20, 2022.
The unfortunate incident happened when an explosive-laden truck collided with a motorcycle, leading to a large blast that has destroyed the entire community. Thirteen residents are reported dead and many injured.
According to the Minority, the tragedy could have been avoided if the protocols governing the transportation of such explosives were strictly followed.
A statement signed by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor, called for an independent investigation into the disaster to prevent any similar future occurrence of such misfortunes.
“This incident is unacceptable because there are strict laid down protocols to be followed during transportation of such explosives in accordance with LI 2177.”
“The Minority is, therefore, calling for an impartial inquiry into this heart-wrenching accident and unfortunate loss of at least, thirteen lives and destruction of several properties,” the statement said.
“This inquiry among others, will prevent the recurrence of such an incident in the future.”
They urged the government to endeavour to provide rapid support systems for the affected people in order to ameliorate the loss of the residents.
“The Minority wishes to join well-meaning Ghanaians to commiserate and share in the pain and anguish of all affected people,” the statement dated January 21, 2022 concluded.
Temporary housing facilities for displaced residents
The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured that measures are being put in place to construct temporary housing facilities for all displaced residents.
He says the government has engaged the State Housing Corporation and mining companies in the area to provide an instant haven for the stranded community members in the coming days.
Dr. Bawumia said this when he led a government delegation to ascertain the state of affairs in the community after a vehicle carrying mining explosives exploded and reduced the whole settlement to ground zero.
“Government, on its part, is going to do everything to support the families and those who have been injured. We are also looking into how to make sure that all those who are injured are taken care of.”
“For the houses that have been destroyed, we are already beginning to think about how to rehabilitate and rebuild for the community. I have already discussed with the State Housing Corporation and in consultation with the mining companies here, we will quickly try to put in place facilities that will help those who have been displaced,” he assured.
