The New Patriotic Party is accusing the opposition National Democratic Congress - NDC, of acting to disrupt government business in Parliament.
This comes in the wake of recent happenings in Parliament where Speaker Alban Bagbin declared 4 seats vacant, giving the NDC a temporary minority on the floor. A move that the Supreme Court subsequently stayed.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, October 23, the Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah alleged that they had uncovered a secret document put together by the opposition NDC, to capture power through the legislature.
According to the NPP, this strategy is detailed in a document titled "Winning the 2024 Elections and Beyond: A Comprehensive NDC Strategy," which they claim outlines how the opposition plans to leverage its near-equal numbers in Parliament to disrupt the government’s legislative agenda.
Mr Ahiagbah, accused the NDC of intentionally collaborating with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to frustrate the government’s efforts in Parliament.
“This strategy the NDC has operated with since 2021 is now fully visible in Parliament. The NDC has, for some reason, taken it upon itself to behave as though it holds the majority in Parliament, and, with the cooperation of the Speaker, they have effectively orchestrated a coup d'état within the legislative process,” Mr Ahiagbah claimed.
He further stressed that the situation is not a one-off incident but “part of a broader, calculated plan detailed in their internal documents to use any means necessary—whether fair or foul—to hinder government business.”
The NPP urged Ghanaians to be vigilant, warning that such tactics could harm the country’s governance and delay critical national development efforts.
