A law lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School, Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for comparing the case of Cecilia Dapaah to the dollar gift saga involving the CEO of Goldbod Sammy Gyamfi and self-styled evangelist Nana Agradaa.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, May 11, was captured in widely circulated footage on social media, which showed Mr. Gyamfi handing over cash to Nana Agradaa following a brief interaction.
His comments came amid a press conference organised by the NPP, where they discussed the controversial dollar gift given by Sammy Gyamfi to Nana Agradaa.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse show, Prof Appiagyei Atua described it as overreaching.
“My concern is not about the money itself, nor the fact that criminality was involved. However, I believe the NPP is overstepping by trying to compare this situation with Cecilia Dapaah’s case. "
These are clearly different cases. We do not have all the facts to compare the two, but even if we did, I am not sure the scale of one can be compared to the other.
"It seems the NPP is attempting to find a way to link the two incidents together, but I don’t believe they are standing on solid ground,” he said.
Prof Appiagyei Atua also discussed the role of the NDC, suggesting that their handling of the situation has not been helpful.
He believes the NDC is attempting to justify Sammy Gyamfi’s actions, regardless of the circumstances.
Of course, Mr. Gyamfi has apologised, but this remains a serious issue. It needs to be addressed properly, with a clear admission of wrongdoing.
However, trying to compare it to the NPP’s record as a way of covering up for Gyamfi is not appropriate.
"We must face the facts as they are in order to maintain trust and confidence in the President’s agenda for a national reset, which is crucial for the country’s future,” he concluded.
