Former General Manager of the defunct Nsoatreman FC, Eric Alagidede,
has linked the persistent issue of hooliganism in Ghanaian football to the lack of proper funding for matchday security.
Drawing from his experience with Nsoatreman, Alagidede revealed that the club regularly set aside GH₵500 per game for the Ghana Police Service to maintain order during matches — an investment he believes was not enough in curbing violent incidents.
Speaking to Luv FM in Kumasi, he lamented the meagre sums allocated to police officers on duty, often numbering between 40 to 50 at a match.
“What we are paying is not enough to take care of the Police. At Nsoatreman, we were paying 1,000 cedis for big games like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak to the Police on duty: is it that what we call payment? We had to pay 1000 cedis for the entire team that I'm telling you these are facts anybody can verify.
“I don't know about the likes of Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. For these smaller clubs, it is 500 cedis we pay every game.
“Typically, you are looking at Police men ranging from around 40 to 50 and all these guys will come in a vehicle, finish the game and it's 500 Ghana cedis they receive.
“This is something you and your listeners did not know but we need to open up this conversation more because it's very crucial going forward,” he said.
