The 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has urged Ghanaians to vote out the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forthcoming elections, citing the severe economic hardships facing the nation.

He argued that the ruling party's policies have exacerbated the challenges of ordinary citizens, making a case for a change in leadership.

Speaking to a large crowd of supporters in Ayawaso East in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Mahama used the soaring price of kenkey, a staple Ghanaian dish, to make a case for the worsening economic conditions.

He noted that the rising cost of basic food items reflected the government’s inability to manage the economy effectively, leaving many households struggling to make ends meet.

The former President criticized the NPP government, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for its handling of the economy.

He recalled how the NPP had previously accused his administration of poor economic management, only to preside over even greater difficulties.

The former President argued that the current leadership has failed to live up to its promises of improving living standards.

He called on voters to seize the opportunity at the ballot box to demand accountability and bring about change.

According to Mr Mahama, the NDC is ready to implement solutions that would address the economic challenges and ease the burdens faced by the populace.

The NDC leader urged Ghanaians to take a stand, emphasizing that their vote is a powerful tool for shaping the future.

He assured supporters that his leadership would prioritize policies aimed at reducing the cost of living and promoting prosperity for all.

“We all remember what the NPP said about the NDC government. At the time, I won’t say everything was going perfectly well but there was so much peace in the country. Akufo-Addo said we were sitting on money yet we were hungry but at the time Kenkey was selling at GH¢1."

“Now, if you want to eat three balls of Kenkey, you would need GH¢15 and if you add 1 fish, that makes it GH¢20, so I am reminding you the people of Ayawaso East that they have failed. So let them pack their stuff and leave.”
