As Rugby Africa prepares for its elective Annual General Meeting in Cape Town South Africa on March 18 2023, Ghana’s foot is firmly in the poll position to annex the position of President of Rugby Africa as Herbert Mensah presents himself as the likely candidate to take over from outgoing President Khalid Babou of Tunisia for the next four years.
But there is a 'pull-him-down' plot to bury that dream.
Herbert Mensah, President of Ghana Rugby was nominated by Nigeria Rugby and seconded by Botswana Rugby with the massive support of French and English West Africa, Southern, central and northern Africa. This is in recognition of his massive transformation of the game in Ghana.
Herbert Mensah is challenged by Andrew Owuo from Uganda.
Herbert Mensah has also received the official endorsement of the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo and his government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Authority and other sporting authorities.
However, some members of the Ghana Rugby Football Union have been found to be plotting against the candidature of Herbert although they admit that his Presidency at Rugby Africa will be a feather in the cap of Ghana.
A shocking audio tape suspected to be the voice of a high-up in the Greater Accra Rugby Association (name withheld), is heard plotting with others within the rugby fraternity to ”put sand in his gari” (as it were, spoil his chances) by doing everything possible to damage Herbert Mensah’s reputation so that other African rugby presidents will vote against him at the elections.
Following this plot, the key architect is heard instructing his colleagues on how to proceed in earnest as they were behind time. The voice said this campaign should have started long ago.
They planned to hide behind social media pseudo accounts to vilify Herbert Mensah as well as write scurrilous emails to all other African rugby unions in their quest to prevent Herbert Mensah from taking leadership of Rugby Africa.
Rugby Africa is the representative body of World Rugby in Africa. If elected, Herbert Mensah will lift the flag of Ghana and Africa high on the world stage for the next four years. He has now passed through the vetting stage and has been cleared as an official candidate for the top post by Rugby Africa.
