National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has lashed out at former President, John Agyekum Kufuor over the latter’s suggestion that those against the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voters’ register should not resort to militancy.
Bernard Mornah, speaking to JoyNews’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson, described the former President’s admonitions as “inimical to the stability he handed over.”
Mr. Kufuor was speaking after a group in support of the register’s compilation had called on him.
Former President Kufuor
He condemned the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register’s occupation of the EC, as part of their protests, adding “when you do that, you are running contrary to the Constitution…and the people’s [will] to sustain the rule of law.”
But Mr. Mornah who speaks for the parties opposing the compilation of the new voters’ register is aggrieved by Kufuor’s position.
He said the Constitution grants citizen’s the right to demonstrate and therefore their actions were within the ambit of the law.
According to him, they had petitioned Kufuor earlier to register their opposition to the register’s compilation but he would not respond to them until he studies their petition.
It, therefore, is unconventional to him that the former president would make public his reservations about their modus operandi without responding to them directly; “it means that president Kufuor probably doesn’t deserve the honour and recognition we have given him,” he said.
