Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested five suspected fraudsters during an operation by officers at the Tafo-Pankrono Divisional Police Command.
The suspects; were picked up at a hideout in Atimatim, a suburb of the Ashanti Region.
The suspects include, 33-year old trader, Karim Mohammed, 31-year old Mason, Nana Kwadwo and a businessman, 31-year old Yaw Baffour.
The others are; 31-year-old businessman, Kwaku Yeboah and a 20-year-old electrician, Daniel Oppong.
According to the police, the suspects have succeeded in duping their victims under the guise of issuing them with lotto numbers and doubling their monies for them.
The Police also retrieved items including mobile phones, a laptop, a cash sum of GHS 2,626 and a Toyota Corolla vehicle.
The suspects through their modus operandi advertise their activities on some local TV stations and radio stations informing unsuspecting populace how they can make them rich by giving those interested lotto numbers to stake and in some instances, they promise doubling monies paid by these unsuspecting clients.
The suspects then publish their mobile phone numbers for monies to be paid on and after receiving such monies, the suspects smartly withdraw the money and discard the SIM card afterwards, making it difficult for those who have paid those monies to reach them.
“These victims have paid monies ranging from GHS 50 to GHS1,000.”
Godwin Ahianyo, Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, addressing journalists in Kumasi appealed to members of the public who might have fallen victims to assist police in their investigations.
“The command is using this medium to appeal to persons who have fallen victims to these activities to come to the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Command to assist in investigations”.
