The African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has urged Ghanaians to uphold peace and transparency as the nation approaches the December elections.
He specifically appealed to political parties to avoid acts of violence, emphasising the need to maintain Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, 28th November, Dr Ibn Chambas underscored the importance of setting a positive example.
He noted that a peaceful electoral process would not only reinforce Ghana’s democratic credentials but also send a strong message to the rest of the continent.
He called on all citizens, especially political leaders and their supporters, to prioritise the nation’s stability over political ambitions.
Dr Chambas reiterated that credible and peaceful elections would solidify Ghana’s standing as a model democracy, fostering unity and development.
“Already, the eyes of the world are on Ghana, sub-regional, international, African observers have already arrived for the elections. I can see many familiar faces among the ECOWAS delegation, the African Union delegation, the Commonwealth delegation, and some of the other observers who are already here."
“We have of course the new ECOWAS Ambassador. And so we will have the international community here to accompany us. Let them go back and report about the peaceful, non-violence, exemplary elections they would have observed in Ghana.”
