The National House of Chiefs is urging all Ghanaians to refrain from causing harm to persons who identify as members of the LGBTQI community in the country.
In a press release signed by President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II spoke against unlawful acts that include burning, lynching and molesting being meted out to LGBTQI persons.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II indicated that such persons should “be reported to the law enforcement agencies for necessary action.”
Despite its concern to protect all lives, the National House of Chiefs says it will by no means support, accept nor condone acts of LGBTQI persons in the Ghanaian community.
According to the statement, "the idea of a man marrying man and woman marrying woman is an abomination to our tradition and culture as Ghanaians."
"The House wants to state without equivocation that throughout history, nowhere does the Ghanaian culture subscribe to LGBTQI which is a taboo, inhuman and alien to our society," Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II added.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II who also doubles as Chief for Sefwi Anhwiaso said the National House of Chiefs will strongly resist any attempt to impose any culture that appears to undermine the Ghanaian tradition.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has expressed opposition against the legislation of same-sex marriage in Ghana.
“I have said it before, and let me stress it again, that it will not be under the Presidency of Nana Addo Danqua Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal,” he said.
His recent statement comes after several calls by state institutions and the general public for the president to come clear and condemn acts of the LGBTQI community in Ghana.
