Executive Director for Parliamentary Centre in Africa Dr Rasheed Draman has stated that assigning officers to Members of Parliament to ensure their safety and security should be a temporary initiative.

According to Dr Draman, this initiative should only serve as a stop-gap solution that will enable government fully assess and find a lasting solution to the burgeoning situation of security concerns in the country as a whole.

"This should not be a permanent thing. Efforts have to be made to ensure the human security of the general public in the country," he relayed speaking to JoyFM.

He further admonished the security agencies to put in all the necessary efforts in ensuring that the security of the general public is not jeopardised.

He cited other countries like Uganda that have adopted the initiative to protect MPs, emphasizing that "in six months, the overall security of the country had been improved" and as such, Ghana should not be an exception.

"In the countries where security has been beefed up for Members of Parliament, it has not been a permanent initiative. Once they were doing that they also had a plan to improve the overall security in the country," he said.

Dr Draman indicated that protecting Members of Parliament has been long overdue and that he is in support of the initiative by the Minister of Interior, Ambrose Derby and the government.

"I believe it is time for this. I believe circumstances have given rise to this and for me on this note, I support the position of the government and the Members of Parliament," he stated.
