MP for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu

The Spokesman for Madina MP, Francis-Xavier Sosu has rebuffed claims that the lawmaker has been served with a court summons.

The Police Service earlier announced that it has formally filed charges against Mr Sosu, including causing damage to public property.

According to Bansi Abubakar Abdul Hamid, the Director-General of Police Public Relations, ACP Kwesi Ofori, who made the announcement, peddled falsehood. According to him, there is no evidence to show that Mr Sosu has been served with any summons.

Speaking to Evans Mensah on Top Story on Wednesday, he said, “as we speak now, Mr Sosu has not been served with any summons. We are aware that the speaker has written to the Police to get them to stop any such proceedings. It is very unfortunate that the Police administration at this point will choose to be peddling falsehood."

“So we can’t just take the word of ACP for it. He has to show us evidence of how he has served the MP and as we speak he has not done that. We have not seen any court document that shows that he has been summoned to appear before the court,” he said.

Mr Hamid’s comments were in reaction to the Police Service’s claims that the embattled MP has finally been charged after the back and forth with Parliament.

Parliamentarian Sosu led a demonstration in his constituency, Madina on October 25.

Some youth partaking in the protest blocked roads and burnt tyres during the march which was aimed to demand good roads.

The MP claims the police deployed to supervise the protest attempted to forcefully arrest him due to the riotous situation that erupted. The youth however resisted the arrest and the MP escaped.

Mr. Sosu subsequently dragged the Police officers involved to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, for contempt of the House.

Per the 1992 Constitution, lawmakers cannot be arrested while on their way to or from Parliamentary business.

But, on Wednesday, November 3 ACP Kwesi Ofori, told JoyNews that they have formally charged the MP and he is supposed to show up in court to answer the charges on November 8.

“The Police has obtained a criminal summons and has been duly served for him to appear in court on November 8…as we enumerated, the charges include; obstructing the highway, causing damage to public property,” he said.

But, Mr Hamid maintained Mr Sosu has not been served with any summons. They have, however, heard about the charges the Police is said to have filed.

“We are actually disturbed about the gross disrespect the Police continue to show the Speaker and what is even worrying is the deliberate distortion of facts and attempt to deceive the general public about what is happening,” Mr Hamid added.
