A Private legal practitioner, Justice Abdulai, wants the prosecution of the suspects accused of stealing huge amounts of money from the home of the immediate past Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah to be halted.
Two house helps and others are standing trial for allegedly stealing $1 million, €300,000 and millions of cedis from Madam Dapaah's Ablekuma residence.
Mr Abdulai believes that authorities must spend their energies in probing the matter properly rather than hurriedly prosecuting the suspects.
He explained that the suspects could provide useful information in the ongoing investigation into the former minister's conduct.
“It is my strongest recommendation that their prosecution be halted at this moment. Let’s listen to them, let’s know what they saw, what they heard, what they witnessed and possibly if it is useful, to have them as prosecutorial witnesses rather than prosecuting them as this moment,” he said in an interview on Joy FM’S Top Story on Tuesday.
He pointed out that imprisoning the suspects would be pointless if they could assist in recovering the funds from the embattled former Minister.
According to him, using them as witnesses would help to unravel information that the former Minister would not be willing to give out.
“They probably could be used as witnesses in this whole saga because they saw more, they heard more. Let’s remember that the stealing took place not within a day, it took a long time for all these events to happen so they have more information,” he said.
Commenting on the same programme, Edem Senanu, Co-Chair of Citizens Movement Against Corruption, expressed similar sentiments.
According to him, the suspects may add value to the investigation based on the information they possess, so they must be protected.
“Depending on what they know, we may have other people with certain interest thinking of harming them and so yes, not just that we should consider them being part of the witnesses in the prosecution side, but also let’s make sure that there is that kind of protection afforded them before anything untoward happens,” he said.
