A former local government minister under the Kufour administration, Kwadwo Agyei Darko, has accused the leadership of the ruling NPP of a poor attitude leading to the collapse of the party.
According to him, there is no need for significant vetting of individuals contesting for the presidential position if they all qualify for the position.
Mr Agyei Darko says the special delegates selecting five of the eight aspirants already have an interest in some candidates, which he says goes against democratic ideals.
Speaking to Nhyira FM’s Nana Jantuah on 'Kuro Yi Mu Nsem' show, he said the idea of special delegates was not planned properly.
Kwadwo Agyei explained some NPP leaders have already made known their preferred candidates, which, according to him, goes against the party’s regulations.
“There has been no unity or sense of belongingness in the party since 2008," he alleged.
According to him, the division in the party started in 2008 because of poor campaign strategy.
"The NDC used their campaign strategy against them, claiming the NPP were using many cars for their campaign, and since the NPP didn't want Ghanaians to believe they were wasting money, someone suggested that those without any special program should go to the venue first before the candidates and the President.
"This did not go well with some members, which brought about the division. And that led to the loss of the election in 2008," he said.
The former minister wants the few candidates who are qualified for the presidential primary to contest in order to help rebuild the party to achieve the agenda of breaking the eight.
