The Director of Communications for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted claims by the NDC that the current NPP administration has abandoned projects started by them.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, August 20, 2021, Yaw Buaben Asamoah said the opposition party feels threatened by the ongoing projects under the current administration, hence these claims.
"The NDC feels threatened. Agenda 111 is killing them. They are afraid of Agenda 111. So they are talking against it just like they talked against free SHS," he said.
The comment follows criticisms from the National Democratic Congress against the government's Agenda 111 project aimed at improving healthcare in the country.
Former President John Dramani Mahama, speaking on GBC Radio in the Upper East Region, as part of his thank-you tour of the Region, described the project as an "afterthought."
He said projects under the initiative will not be completed before the NPP leaves office, adding that processes involved lack transparency.
Also, Former Deputy Information Minister under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, Felix Ofosu Kwakye described the project as a “knee-jerk” reaction to the NDC government’s achievements in the health sector.
Speaking on Joy FM's Top Story, he said the project has been introduced by the government as a way to put a stop to the praises former President John Mahama received for his contribution to health care delivery in the country, which proved worthwhile during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
But Mr Buaben Asamoa challenged this claim.
He clarified that the NPP 2016 manifesto promised to upgrade existing district hospitals and establish new ones in every district where there was none and that's what the government seeks to achieve with this initiative.
"Every project has a reason why it's happening or not happening. The Agenda 111 project is a well-thought-through intervention worthy of study by the NDC.
"However, for myopic political purposes founded on the spot non-performance and incompetence, the NDC wants an initiative that will benefit millions of Ghanaians stopped just because it threatens the assumptions of the 2024 elections," he added.
