Staff of the University of Ghana and other residents near the Achimota Police Station have pledged to resist eviction efforts initiated by an unknown private contractor in the area.
This resistance follows Sunday's demolition of houses and makeshift structures by individuals described as land guards.
According to available information, this operation was carried out with police present.
The Chairman of the University of Ghana Branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Benjamin Nkumsah, condemned the demolition and called for an immediate halt to the eviction process while urging the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to step in.
Channel One news reports that the affected occupants are demanding that their rights be respected and are calling for an immediate cessation of the eviction process. They also seek clarity from the authorities about the identity of the private contractor and the legitimacy of the demolition exercise.
Mr Nkumsah explained that the demolition was unexpected and conducted with significant force.
“What’s happening is that someone is putting up a building here. I don’t know who the building belongs to, but all of a sudden, they came around 12 am to conduct a demolition exercise. I was told that the police were present, pistols were mounted, and shots were fired around the area. We see this as an incident the state is aware of, which is why we are calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene,” he appealed.
Emphasizing the need for respect and proper procedure, Mr. Nkumsah stated, “You cannot invade someone’s residence at midnight to demolish it, especially when families are inside. There should be respect for the people.”
He added “We demand that whoever is behind this construction halt their actions immediately. If not, we will resist any further attempts to evict our people.”
