Former President John Mahama has urged all eligible Ghanaians to come out and register to vote from Tuesday, June 30.
He said all those with Ghana cards and Passports should come out to partake in the process and also help to guarantee for those without the two documents.
“I implore you to assist your brother, sister and compatriot by guaranteeing for them even if it takes a bit more of your time,” Mahama said at a press conference Thursday evening.
His comments follow the Supreme Court’s ruling in the disputed decision of the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters’ register.
The NDC which first challenged the decision in the court argued that the current register is credible and a new one would be a waste of taxpayers’ cash.
They also said the decision was masterminded by the governing NPP, having demanded for a new register when in opposition.
The NDC claims the decision is a grand scheme to rig the December elections after the Akufo-Addo administration failed its 2016 mandate.
But the EC argued the current register is bloated with foreigners and also, the management system is at an end of life and must be replaced.
The NDC however, remained adamant and challenged the matter in the apex court, asking that even if a new register should be compiled, the existing voter IDs should be accepted as identification documents.
The Court in its ruling Thursday said the EC can go ahead with the compilation and that it should be done in accordance with C.I. 126 which restricts the identification documents to passports and Ghana cards only.
Mahama, in reacting to this noted this ruling is disappointing for all Ghanaians who already have the voters’ ID and have to queue for one again in a time of a raging pandemic.
“I therefore urge all Ghanaians of voting age to channel the disappointment at the effort to exclude them from the electoral process into an opportunity to have their voices heard and turn up to register in their teeming numbers, when the process begins next week Tuesday,” he said at the party’s headquarters at Adabraka in Accra.
The compilation of the register starts on June 30 and will last for 38 days.
