The Minority in Parliament has reiterated its strong opposition to the Electoral Commission's (EC) decision to lay a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) which makes the Ghana Card the sole identification document for voters registration.
According to the Caucus, until this and other issues raised are addressed satisfactorily, they will remain in opposition to it.
This is according to the Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
The Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP while speaking at a press briefing following the resumption of Parliament from recess on Wednesday, February 8, said there is still time for the issues raised to be resolved.
“The Majority Leader hinted that they intend to lay the C.I for the district assembly elections to be able to continue.
“We have indicated our strong disagreements with some of the provisions in the C.I and it is our hope that we can iron these issues out before any attempts will be made to lay it,” Dr Ato Forson said.
At the same engagement, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu said the needed consultations will be done.
According to him, failure to get the C.I. passed on time will hinder the next district assembly elections scheduled for October this year.
“We need to have consultations with the new leadership before plenary comes to consider them.
“There is also this outstanding business about the constitutional instrument from the Electoral Commission and without that holding the district assembly elections in October may be difficult.”
