The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has challenged former President John Mahama, the assumed winner of the 2024 presidential election, to defy expectations and demonstrate that his second term will be marked by transformational leadership.
According to the EFL, Mr Mahama has a unique opportunity to prove skeptics wrong and deliver the progress Ghanaians desperately need.
In a statement following the December 7 general elections, the EFL expressed doubt that Mr Mahama’s governance would differ significantly from that of outgoing President Akufo-Addo.
They pointed to his first term as a reason for their skepticism but acknowledged that this second chance could redefine his legacy.
"We do not expect you to be fundamentally different from Akufo-Addo—especially as a president in your second term," part of the statement read.
"However, you now have the opportunity to prove us wrong. Be better than you were in your first term. Lead with integrity, humility, and vision."
The group urged Mr Mahama to address key areas of governance that they believe would demonstrate his commitment to reform and accountability.
They called on him to pursue policies that would promote inclusivity, transparency, and environmental stewardship, emphasising the need to recover resources lost to corruption and take decisive action against illegal mining (galamsey).
The EFL further challenged Mr Mahama to prioritise systemic reforms such as constitutional amendments that address governance flaws and ensure the inclusion of marginalised groups such as women, youth, and persons living with disabilities in national decision-making processes.
"This is your chance to right your wrongs in the past; your chance to heal and unite the nation; your chance to create a truly democratic and inclusive society," they said.
While congratulating Mr Mahama on his victory, the group expressed doubts about the promises he made during his campaign, suggesting that some critical reforms were not adequately addressed.
Nonetheless, they urged him to rise to the occasion, overcome the doubts, and lead with a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility.
The EFL called for vigilance, noting that they would commend the president-elect when he succeeds but hold him accountable when he fails.
