Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwasi Agyeman says his outfit anticipates a rise in the number of attendees from across the world for December in GH festivities this year.
He foresees that this will be accompanied by impressive growth in domestic tourism.
According to the GTA boss, the last three years have seen a significant increase in revelers who throng the country for December activities.
"Based on the feedback we have received from event organisers, based on what we saw, based on the numbers at the airport, based on everything that went on, I think it was a successful December in GH for tourism. It is a revamp from the pandemic era," he said.
He was speaking on the Joy FM's Super Morning Show on January 9, 2024.
Mr Agyeman explained that the December 2023 activities were successful because it was a collaborative effort between the Ghana Police Service and National Security, who helped to ensure that the country was safe.
Building on this, the CEO said he expects December 2024 to be a better year.
“We look forward to even a better 2024 in terms of our tourism numbers domestic tourism also growing and also domestic tourism also growing and also strengthen the relationship with the diaspora groups that we have,” he said.
He added that the main purpose of these activities is for people not only to come for fun but also to contribute to making a positive impact in various communities.
Meanwhile, the President of the African American Association of Ghana, Diallo Sumbry, has raised concerns about Ghana’s infrastructure capacity to host the increasing number of tourists who visit for yearly activities.
“I just saw a post online where a lady is basically like ‘black people if you haven’t been to Ghana, you are missing out on your life’. People are sharing this thing, it is growing. We haven’t really got there yet.
“We haven’t got there yet because we are not ready to get there. I mean can we host 250,000 people in Ghana?” he quizzed.
