The Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has indicated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) may seek a recall of Parliament to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to audit the voter's register for election 2024.
According to Dr Forson, the audit is crucial to address irregularities and ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent.
Speaking during a nationwide demonstration by the NDC against the EC in Accra, Dr Forson expressed deep concerns over alleged tampering with the voter's register, stating that the party cannot overlook the discrepancies.
"We believe that the voter's register must be audited. The level of tampering we've observed so far makes it impossible to proceed without a proper review. This audit will help us understand the extent of the issue and fix the system,” he said.
Dr Forson stressed that the NDC’s demand for an audit stems from its commitment to maintaining peace during the election.
He also urged the EC to take swift and transparent action to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
He went on to cite specific issues in his constituency, highlighting significant irregularities. “In my own constituency, we’ve uncovered the addition of about 3,000 names in the transfer register and several instances of multiple names. In total, the register has been bloated by roughly 5,000 names. This raises serious concerns, and we need Parliament to intervene,” Dr Forson added.
The Minority Leader also raised broader concerns about the actions of the EC, implying that the Commission’s conduct was troubling.
Dr Forson revealed that the NDC is prepared to take additional measures if their concerns are not addressed. “So what you are seeing today is just the first step, we will undertake a series of activities, including a possible recall of Parliament for us to compel the Electoral Commissioners to do what is required.
In closing, he called on Ghanaians to demand accountability from the EC, reminding citizens that their role in the upcoming elections is vital.
“The most important person is the Ghanaian voter. We want to make sure that on election day, everyone can vote and that every vote counts. We are asking Ghanaians to get involved and ensure that the right things are done.”
