The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary caucus and its supporters are expected to stage a protest over what they describe as growing concerns about the administration of justice in the country.
The demonstration follows weeks of accusations by the opposition that the justice system is being applied selectively in politically sensitive cases.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, NPP communications team member and aspiring National Communications Officer Dennis Miracles Aboagye argued that Ghana’s judiciary must remain completely independent of political influence.
“I am of the view that we need to keep our judiciary very far away from our politics, far, far, far away from our politics,” he said.
Mr Aboagye disclosed that he had written to the Chief Justice about what he described as an increasingly close relationship between the judiciary and the Executive.
“I wrote a letter to His Lordship… where I itemised my worry about his relationship and his romance with the executive, and the fact that it’s becoming too glaring,” he said.
He explained that although he did not receive a direct response from the Chief Justice, the Judicial Secretary later issued a statement addressing some of the concerns he had raised.
‘“The judicial secretary responded, and I thought, okay, it’s fine. At least they’ve clarified certain things,” he noted.
Despite that clarification, Mr Aboagye insisted his concerns remain.
“I felt uncomfortable that you are looking too close. The proximity within which you seem to be moving around with these people—it’s becoming too blatant,” he said.
According to him, such perceptions undermine public confidence in the courts, particularly among people who believe they may not enjoy favour with the government.
“I get worried that these people don’t like me, and so… if you are this way with them, and I have an issue, they probably have your ears. I don’t. How safe I am?” he questioned.
He dismissed attempts to justify the situation by comparing it with previous administrations.
“I don’t take those excuses of comparisons, those excuses of what was done. I don’t care. I am a citizen. I feel that, as it is happening today, I am worried about it. I want to speak up,” he stated.
Mr Aboagye said he believes many of those expected to join the protest share similar concerns.
“The 10s and 1000s of people you will be seeing tomorrow on the street are simply saying that the judiciary seems to be romancing with the executive and is making the executive too comfortable,” he said.
Responding to questions about claims of selective justice, he argued that some criminal cases were being singled out for hearing during the legal vacation while many older cases remain pending.
“You have a lot of cases in the court, a lot of criminal cases, a lot of civil cases. Some of them predate even 2020… This year, you are going on legal vacation, and you say that even though all of you are being tried for criminal cases, I have selected a few of you… That is selective justice,” he asserted.
