Former President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to increasing women’s representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and other leadership roles across various sectors of Ghanaian society if he wins the upcoming December elections.
Mr Mahama stressed that ensuring gender equality in leadership is not just a moral obligation but a crucial step in harnessing the full potential of Ghana's human resources.
"We will increase women’s representation in Parliament, district assemblies, and leadership roles across all sectors. We will do this not only because it is the right thing to do, but also because Ghana needs the best of its human resources," Mr Mahama stated.
He made this pledge during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) women’s manifesto launch on Monday, September 30.
As part of his broader commitment to gender equality, Mahama pledged to operationalise the Affirmative Action Act of 2024, a landmark legislation aimed at ensuring women’s empowerment in political spaces.
"The Affirmative Action Act of 2024 will ensure that women hold at least 30% of political appointments," he declared.
Additionally, the NDC flagbearer promised to enact the Property Rights of Spouses Bill stressing that this law is crucial in safeguarding women’s rights in marriage.
“Marriage unites spouses, and in the event of any unfortunate circumstances, properties such as buildings and farmland should be shared equally. No man should have the authority to evict a woman without her receiving her rightful share.”
Also, Mr Mahama announced plans to introduce a Domestic Workers Bill aimed at protecting vulnerable workers, predominantly women, from mistreatment.
